Features of orality in the language of fiction: A corpus-based investigation

This paper explores the pervasiveness of features orality in language performed fiction. Features are typical spontaneous spoken conversations where they result ongoing planning process and interaction between interlocutors, but also occur context fiction (movies plays) narrative (e.g. novels). In these contexts, not generally produced to imitate such processes. this paper, I explore a small range (contractions, interjections, discourse markers, response forms hesitators) four corpora that have recently become available ( Corpus American Soap Operas, TV Corpus, Movies Sydney Television Dialogue) compare their frequency patterns with face-to-face Santa Barbara Spoken English academic writing Contemporary (COCA). The results confirm selected used regularly less frequently than interactions while rare almost entirely absent writing. show status transcriptions contained needs be assessed very carefully if for study pragmatic features.
